Quick fix: Open Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options. Find If you’ve been away, when should Windows require you to sign in again?. Pick Never or longer time. For battery: Settings → System → Power & battery → Screen and sleep → ensure sleep timer is reasonable. Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → Dynamic Lock off (if enabled).
Windows 11 on battery may require password after every wake for security. Tighter on battery than plugged in. Adjust if security less critical than convenience.
Affects: Windows 11 laptops on battery.
Fix time: ~5 minutes.
What causes this
Default behavior balances security (auto-lock when away) with convenience. Windows is stricter on battery (laptop more likely lost / stolen). Setting controls how long until password required.
Method 1: Change sign-in requirement
The standard route.
- Open Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options.
- Find If you’ve been away, when should Windows require you to sign in again?.
- Pick from dropdown:
- Never: don’t require password on wake. Convenient but less secure.
- Every time: always require.
- When PC wakes from sleep: require after every wake from sleep.
- 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, etc.: require after that period of inactivity.
- For Win11: this option may be under Additional settings. Click that section.
- Set to Never for max convenience, or 1 minute for balance.
- For specific app desktop: doesn’t lock during active work.
- For shared / public PCs: keep at Every time for security.
This is the standard fix.
Method 2: Configure power settings
For battery-specific behavior.
- Open Settings → System → Power & battery.
- Under Screen and sleep:
- When plugged in, sleep after: pick longer time (or Never).
- On battery, sleep after: shorter for battery savings.
- For not requiring password when waking from sleep: covered in Method 1 (Sign-in options).
- For BitLocker on battery: may require recovery key prompt if hardware change detected. Suspend BitLocker for known maintenance.
- For Modern Standby vs Sleep: Win11 laptops typically use Modern Standby. Wake is fast but security tighter.
- For chronic password prompts: check Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → Additional settings.
This is the power-related fix.
Method 3: Disable Dynamic Lock if enabled
For Bluetooth-paired phone scenarios.
- Dynamic Lock auto-locks Windows when paired Bluetooth phone moves away.
- Open Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → Dynamic Lock.
- Untick Allow Windows to automatically lock your device when you’re away.
- If enabled: phone movement triggers immediate lock + password on next access.
- Disable if you prefer manual lock control.
- Alternative: keep Dynamic Lock for security, but set Sign-in requirement to Never — password not required on re-access.
- For corporate-managed PCs: dynamic lock may be enforced by Group Policy.
- For Windows Hello users: Hello sign-in is faster than password. Tolerate the prompt with quick auth.
This is the Dynamic Lock disable.
How to verify the fix worked
- Wake PC from sleep on battery. Doesn’t require password (if set to Never).
- Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options shows the selected time.
- Power & battery shows desired sleep times.
- Dynamic Lock disabled (if previously enabled).
If none of these work
If password still required: Group Policy enforcing: corporate-managed. gpresult /h C:\report.html to check. For Windows Hello PIN: PIN is convenient. Use instead of full password. For BitLocker recovery loops: hardware change. Suspend BitLocker. For specific build issues: known bug in some Win11 builds. Install latest cumulative. For Surface devices: Surface-specific power management may add behavior. For chronic security concerns: enable Windows Hello face / fingerprint for fast unlock. For pro / corporate use: keep Sign-in: Every time. Security > convenience for sensitive data. For multiple users on PC: each has own sign-in requirement setting.
Bottom line: Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → If you’ve been away, when should Windows require you to sign in again? → Never. Adjust sleep timer in Power & battery. Disable Dynamic Lock if Bluetooth phone proximity is locking.
