PowerPoint Designer Not Showing Suggestions: Requirements Check

You open PowerPoint, select a slide, and click the Designer button expecting design ideas. Nothing appears or the panel stays empty. This usually happens because your presentation or subscription does not meet the feature requirements. Why Designer Fails to Show Suggestions

The most common reason Designer shows no suggestions is the use of a non-subscription version of PowerPoint. Office 2021, Office 2019, and Office 2016 are perpetual licenses. Designer is excluded from these editions. You need a Microsoft 365 subscription such as Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard, Business Premium, Enterprise E3, E5, Education, or Personal/Family.

Even with a valid subscription, Designer will not work offline. The feature must communicate with Microsoft servers. If your network blocks the required endpoints or you are in airplane mode, the panel remains empty. Additionally, the slide must contain recognized content types. A completely blank slide or a slide with only a chart or a table will not trigger Designer.

Open File > Account. Under Subscription, you should see Microsoft 365. If you see Office 2021 or Office 2019, you do not have Designer. Also check that your account is activated. A grace period or expired subscription will disable cloud features.

Designer works with slides that contain at least one of these elements: a title or text placeholder, one or more images, or icons. It does not respond to slides that contain only shapes, SmartArt, charts, tables, or videos. Steps to Verify and Enable Designer

1. Check your subscription type
   Open PowerPoint and go to File > Account. Look at the product information. If it says Microsoft 365, proceed. If it says Office 2021 or similar, you need to upgrade to a Microsoft 365 plan.
2. Sign in to your Microsoft 365 account
   Under File > Account, verify that you are signed in with the email linked to your subscription. If not, click Sign In and enter your credentials.

Designer button is present but shows no ideas

Designer cannot generate suggestions from shapes, WordArt, or embedded objects. Also check that the slide does not use a very large number of objects. A slide with more than 20 elements may be skipped.

Designer button is grayed out or missing

A grayed-out button indicates the feature is disabled in Options or by Group Policy. Go to File > Options > General and ensure Automatically show me design ideas is checked. Designer works in one presentation but not another
