How DPI changes the required pixel count
DPI means dots per inch for a printer; PPI means pixels per inch for an image. This calculator uses the chosen print-resolution value to calculate image pixels. Required pixels are calculated as physical inches × DPI. Increasing only a file’s DPI metadata does not create additional image detail.

When the printed size does not match the calculation
Print dialogs often enable “fit to page” or “shrink oversized pages.” Choose 100% or actual size when a form, label, pattern, or template must keep its physical dimensions.
Most printers also have an unprintable edge. Enough pixels do not guarantee borderless output, so check the printer or lab specification.

Check photo size and aspect ratio
Common photo prints use different aspect ratios: 4 × 6 is 3:2, 5 × 7 is 7:5, and 8 × 10 is 5:4. Crop intentionally before export to avoid automatic trimming.
At 300 dpi, useful references are 1200 × 1800 px, 1500 × 2100 px, and 2400 × 3000 px respectively.

Follow the print provider’s specification. If none is supplied, 300 dpi is a common general target.
Why is the output smaller than expected?
Check for fit-to-page scaling and select 100% or actual size.

US Letter or A4 at 300 DPI?
For an 8.5 × 11 in Letter sheet at 300 DPI, the image area is 2,550 × 3,300 pixels before margins or bleed. A4 at the same DPI is approximately 2,480 × 3,508 pixels. Select the actual paper size; resizing a Letter layout to A4 can shift content.
Calculate first, then check the application’s print scale and the printer’s non-printable edges. Changing DPI metadata alone does not add image detail.
Will a 1,200 × 1,800 px photo print at 4 × 6 in?
At 300 DPI, 1,200 × 1,800 pixels gives 4 × 6 in (101.6 × 152.4 mm). Use the pixel-to-print-size tab to check another image. A larger print uses fewer pixels per inch and may look softer.
DPI is used here as the calculator’s print-resolution setting; for the source image, pixels per inch (PPI) is the more precise term. Follow your print provider’s requirements.
