What Are Trending Topics on Threads and How Region Affects Them

Trending topics on Threads are a curated list of subjects that are currently popular among users in your geographic area. The list updates in real time and includes topics from news, entertainment, sports, technology, and more. Threads determines your region primarily from your IP address and the location associated with your Instagram profile, which is linked to your Threads account.

The trending topics feature is designed to show you what is relevant to your local community. For example, if you live in Tokyo, you will see topics popular in Japan rather than global trends. The system also factors in the accounts you follow and the topics you engage with to personalize the list further. You cannot see trending topics from a different region unless you change your location settings or use a VPN, which is not officially supported by Threads.

The feature is available in the Threads mobile app for iOS and Android. At launch, it is rolling out to users in select countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Brazil. Meta plans to expand availability to more regions over time. If you do not see the trending topics section, your region may not yet have the feature enabled.

Steps to Access Trending Topics on Threads

1. Open the Threads app
   Launch Threads on your mobile device. Make sure you are signed in to your account.
2. Tap the Search tab
   At the bottom of the screen, tap the magnifying glass icon to open the Search tab. This tab shows a search bar at the top and a list of trending topics below it.
3. Scroll to the Trending now section
   Below the search bar, you will see a section labeled Trending now. This section contains a scrollable list of topics with a number next to each one indicating how many posts are currently discussing that topic.
4. Tap a topic to explore it
   Tap any topic in the list to see a feed of public posts related to that subject. The feed updates as new posts are added.
5. Use the three-dot menu to refine your view
   Tap the three-dot icon next to a topic to see options: Hide this topic or Report a problem. Use Hide this topic to remove a subject you do not want to see again. Use Report a problem if the topic is not relevant to your region.

How to Customize Your Trending Topics Preferences

You can adjust your content preferences to influence which trending topics appear. These settings do not let you change your region, but they help Threads show topics more aligned with your interests.

1. Go to your profile
   Tap the profile icon at the bottom right of the screen.
2. Open Settings
   Tap the two-line menu icon at the top right, then select Settings.
3. Tap Account
   In the Settings menu, tap Account.
4. Select Content preferences
   Under the Account section, tap Content preferences.
5. Adjust topic interests
   In the Content preferences screen, tap Topics. You will see a list of categories such as News, Entertainment, Sports, and Technology. Tap the toggle next to each category to turn it on or off. Turning off a category reduces the number of trending topics from that category.

   Still in Content preferences, tap Muted words. Add words or phrases whose trending topics you want to hide. For example, if you do not want to see topics about a specific TV show, add the show name as a muted word.

Common Issues and Limitations With Regional Trending Topics

Trending now section does not appear

If you do not see the Trending now section in the Search tab, the feature is likely not yet available in your region. Meta is rolling out trending topics gradually. To check if your region is supported, visit the Threads Help Center or check the official Threads blog. You can also update your app to the latest version, as new features are often included in updates.

Topics shown are not from my region

If the trending topics seem unrelated to your location, your IP address may be routing through a different region. This can happen if you use a VPN or if your internet service provider assigns an IP address from another area. Disconnect any VPN and restart the app. If the problem continues, check your Instagram profile location by going to Instagram > Edit profile > Personal information and confirming your city and country are correct. Threads pulls location data from your Instagram profile.

I cannot hide a topic permanently

The Hide this topic option only removes the topic from your current view. The same topic may reappear later if it continues to trend. To prevent a topic from appearing again, use the Muted words feature in Content preferences and add the topic name as a muted word. This hides all posts and topics containing that word.
