Quick fix: Edge tab groups don’t persist across browser restarts by default. To persist: Settings → Start, home, and new tabs → Open the new tab page change to Open tabs from the previous session. Or use Workspaces (icon in title bar) instead of Tab Groups for persistent organization. Workspaces always persist.
Edge Tab Groups: visual color-coded grouping. Disappear on restart unless “Open previous session” enabled. Workspaces (different feature) persist by design.
Affects: Microsoft Edge on Windows 11.
Fix time: ~5 minutes.
What causes this
Tab Groups: visual / organizational. Stored in current session memory. On Edge close: session ends, groups gone. Workspaces: persistent, stored in profile data. Different concepts.
Method 1: Enable Open previous session
The standard route.
- Open Edge.
- URL:
edge://settings/onStartup. - Pick Open tabs from the previous session.
- OK.
- Now closing Edge then reopening: tabs restore in same groups.
- For chronic: this becomes default behavior.
- Caveat: too many tabs over time accumulate. Periodically clean up.
- For specific tab: pin via right-click → Pin tab. Pinned stays across sessions regardless of session setting.
This is the standard fix.
Method 2: Use Workspaces for persistent groups
For better organization.
- Click Workspaces icon in Edge toolbar (if not visible: enable via menu).
- Create new workspace per project / topic.
- Add tabs to workspace.
- Workspace and its tabs persist across browser restarts automatically.
- Switch workspaces via dropdown.
- Difference from Tab Groups: Workspaces are full mini-browser sessions, persistent. Tab Groups are visual labels within one workspace.
- For combining: within a workspace, also use Tab Groups for sub-organization.
- For team sharing: Edge for Business workspaces shareable.
This is the persistent route.
Method 3: Bookmark groups as folders
For long-term archive.
- For tab groups you want to revisit later: bookmark them.
- Right-click tab group label → Add all tabs to bookmarks folder.
- Creates bookmark folder with all tabs.
- To reopen group: right-click folder in Bookmarks → Open all in new tab group.
- For multiple groups: each becomes folder.
- For chronic: organize bookmarks bar with project folders. Click folder = open all.
- For sync across devices: bookmarks sync if Edge sign-in.
- For maximum: Workspaces for active work + bookmarks for archive + Pinned for daily essentials.
This is the archive route.
How to verify the fix worked
- Close Edge.
- Reopen: tab groups restored.
- Or: Workspaces visible in dropdown.
- Or: bookmark folder opens all tabs as group.
If none of these work
If groups still disappear: Edge crashes: tabs may not save state. Update Edge. For corporate-managed Edge: Group Policy may force New Tab. For Insider builds: features may shift. For sync issues: Settings → Profiles → check Sync settings. For specific apps clearing: PC cleanup tools (CCleaner) may clear Edge session. For chronic many-tab management: switch to vertical tabs view (right-click tab strip → Vertical tabs). More organized than horizontal.
Bottom line: Settings → edge://settings/onStartup → Open tabs from previous session. For real persistence: use Workspaces instead of Tab Groups. Bookmark folders for long-term archive.
