How to Switch Between Multiple Threads Accounts on iOS

2026年5月8日 by wisechecker

If you manage a personal Threads profile and a brand or hobby account on the same iPhone, you have likely noticed that Threads does not offer a visible account switcher like Instagram or Twitter. Switching between accounts requires a specific sequence of taps that is not immediately obvious. This article explains the exact steps to add a second account and switch between accounts on the Threads iOS app.

Threads links directly to your Instagram login. Each Threads account is tied to one Instagram account. To use multiple Threads accounts, you must add each Instagram account to the same device first. Once added, switching takes only a few seconds.

This guide covers the account setup process, the switching method, and common problems such as accounts not appearing or the switch button being grayed out.

Key Takeaways: Switching Threads Accounts on iPhone

  • Profile tab > username at top: Tap the current username to open the account picker.
  • Add Instagram account first: Your iPhone must have the Instagram account saved in Settings or the Instagram app before it appears in Threads.
  • Log out and log in again: If the account picker does not show, sign out of Threads and sign in with the other Instagram account.

How Threads Account Switching Works on iOS

Threads does not have a standalone account creation system. Every Threads account is created through an Instagram login. When you open Threads for the first time, the app asks you to log in with Instagram. The Instagram account you choose becomes your Threads identity.

To use a second Threads account, your iPhone must already have the second Instagram account stored. This can happen in two ways: you have the Instagram app installed and logged into that account, or you have added the account to your iPhone’s Settings under Passwords & Accounts. Threads reads the available Instagram accounts from the system and lists them in the account picker.

You cannot create multiple Threads accounts from the same Instagram profile. Each Threads account requires a unique Instagram account. If you want a second Threads profile, you need a second Instagram account first.

Steps to Add and Switch Between Threads Accounts on iPhone

Follow these steps to set up a second account and switch between accounts. The instructions assume you already have a primary Threads account active on your iPhone.

Step 1: Add the Second Instagram Account to Your iPhone

  1. Open the Instagram app
Log into the second Instagram account. Make sure you stay logged in. You do not need to log out of your primary Instagram account — Instagram supports multiple accounts.
  2. Alternatively, add the account in iOS Settings
Go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts > Add Account > Instagram. Enter the username and password. This stores the account at the system level so Threads can detect it.

Step 2: Open the Account Picker in Threads

  1. Tap the Profile tab
It is the person icon at the bottom right of the screen.
  2. Tap your current username
Your username appears at the top of the profile page, directly below your profile picture. Tapping it opens a small menu with a list of available accounts and an option to add an account.

Step 3: Add the Second Account to Threads

  1. Tap Add Instagram account
This option appears at the bottom of the account list. A system dialog opens showing all Instagram accounts saved on your iPhone.
  2. Select the second Instagram account
Threads logs into that account and creates a new Threads profile. You may need to accept the Threads terms of service again.

Step 4: Switch Between Accounts

  1. Go to the Profile tab
Tap the person icon at the bottom right.
  2. Tap your current username at the top
The account picker shows all added accounts. Tap the account you want to switch to. Threads reloads the feed and profile for that account.

Common Issues When Switching Threads Accounts on iOS

Second account does not appear in the account picker

The most common cause is that the second Instagram account is not saved on the device. Open the Instagram app and log into the second account. Then force-close Threads and reopen it. The account should appear in the picker. If it still does not show, add the account in iOS Settings under Passwords & Accounts.

Threads asks me to log in again after switching

This happens when Threads loses the session token for one of the accounts. Sign out of both accounts by going to Profile > username > Log out. Then log in again with the primary account and add the second account fresh. Do not switch accounts too quickly — wait five seconds after tapping the account name.

I cannot switch because the username tap does nothing

The username at the top of the profile page is tappable only if you have more than one account added. If you only have one account, tapping the username does nothing. Add a second account first using the steps above. If the username still does not respond, update the Threads app to the latest version from the App Store.

Notifications from the other account still appear

Threads sends push notifications for the account that is currently active. If you receive notifications from an account you are not using, the app may not have fully switched. Go to Profile > username and confirm the active account has a checkmark. If the wrong account shows a checkmark, tap the correct account again.

Threads Account Switching vs Instagram Account Switching on iOS

Item Threads Instagram
Account picker location Profile tab > tap username Profile tab > tap username or arrow
Number of accounts supported Up to 5 Up to 5
Requires Instagram account to be saved on device Yes No — Instagram stores accounts internally
Switch speed 2-3 seconds with feed reload Instant, no reload
Can use different Instagram accounts for each Threads profile Yes N/A

You can now switch between multiple Threads accounts on your iPhone without logging out. The account picker is the fastest method. If you need to remove an account, go to Profile > username > tap the account name and select Remove from this device. This does not delete your Threads profile — it only removes it from the app on that iPhone.

For power users, consider assigning each Instagram account a different color profile in the Instagram app so you can visually distinguish them when switching in Threads. This is not a Threads setting, but it helps avoid posting to the wrong account.
