Threads is slowly enabling the Fediverse sharing feature, also known as ActivityPub integration, for users around the world. This feature lets your public Threads posts appear on other platforms like Mastodon. However, the rollout is not global yet. Many users cannot find the Fediverse sharing option in their account settings. This article explains which countries currently have the feature, how to check your own region, and what to do if your country is not on the list.

What the Fediverse Rollout Means for Threads Users

The Fediverse sharing feature allows Threads users to connect their accounts to the broader ActivityPub network. When enabled, any public post you make on Threads is also visible to users on Mastodon, Pleroma, and other compatible platforms. This is a significant step toward making Threads interoperable with the open social web.

Meta began testing Fediverse sharing in early 2024 with a small group of users in select countries. The company has gradually expanded the rollout to more regions. As of late 2024, the feature is available in over 100 countries. However, Meta has not published an official, up-to-date list. The availability depends on local regulations, data privacy laws, and technical infrastructure.

How the Rollout Works

The Fediverse sharing toggle appears in the Threads app under Profile > Privacy > Fediverse sharing. If you do not see this option, your account is not in a supported region. Meta controls access based on the country associated with your Instagram account profile. Changing your device language or using a VPN does not unlock the feature. The setting is tied to your account region, not your current IP address.

How to Check If Your Country Supports Fediverse Sharing

Follow these steps to verify whether your Threads account can use the Fediverse feature:

1. Open the Threads app
   Launch Threads on your iOS or Android device. Make sure you are logged into the account you want to check.
2. Go to your Profile
   Tap the profile icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
3. Open Settings
   Tap the two horizontal lines (hamburger menu) in the top-right corner, then select Settings.
4. Navigate to Privacy
   In the Settings menu, tap Privacy.
5. Look for the Fediverse sharing option
   Scroll down the Privacy page. If you see a section labeled Fediverse sharing with a toggle, your country is supported. If the section is missing entirely, your region is not yet part of the rollout.

Supported Countries for Threads Fediverse Sharing

Meta has not released an official country list. However, based on user reports and publicly available data from Meta’s support pages, the following countries currently have access to the Fediverse sharing feature:

• United States – Full availability since early 2024.
• Canada – Available from mid-2024.
• United Kingdom – Available from mid-2024.
• Australia – Available from mid-2024.
• New Zealand – Available from mid-2024.
• Japan – Available from late 2024.
• South Korea – Available from late 2024.
• India – Available from late 2024.
• Brazil – Available from late 2024.

• Most European Union countries – Available, but some countries like Germany and France had earlier access.

If your country is not listed, it may still be added in a future rollout wave. Meta typically announces expansions through its official Threads blog or the @threads Instagram account.

What to Do If Your Country Is Not Supported Yet

If the Fediverse sharing option is missing from your Privacy settings, there are only two realistic options:

Wait for the Official Rollout

Meta continues to expand the feature to new regions. There is no way to force-enable it. Attempting to change your Instagram account country or using a VPN will not work. The setting is locked to the region associated with your Instagram profile at the time of account creation.

Use a Third-Party Bridge (Not Recommended)

Some third-party services claim to bridge Threads to Mastodon without the official Fediverse sharing feature. These services often require you to share your login credentials or give them access to your account. This violates Meta’s Terms of Service and can lead to account suspension. Do not use them.

If the Fediverse Sharing Toggle Disappears After Being Available

A small number of users report that the Fediverse sharing toggle disappeared after they had previously enabled it. This usually happens for one of two reasons:

Account Region Changed

If you moved to a different country and updated your Instagram profile location, your Threads account may lose access to Fediverse sharing. The feature is tied to your original region. Changing your profile location to a supported country does not restore the toggle.

Meta Rolled Back the Feature in Your Region

In rare cases, Meta temporarily disables Fediverse sharing in a region due to technical issues or regulatory reviews. If this happens, the toggle will return once the issue is resolved. No action is required on your part.

If your country is not yet supported, you can still read public Threads posts on Mastodon by searching for a Threads user’s handle on a Mastodon server. You just cannot post from Threads to the Fediverse until the toggle appears in your settings. Check the official Threads blog every few months for updates on new country additions.
