OneDrive for Business file restore restores the wrong version for ransomware recovery: Fix Guide

If a ransomware restore returns encrypted, damaged or otherwise unsuitable files, do not assume that an earlier timestamp alone guarantees safety. Establish a clean recovery environment and validate candidate content against the incident evidence before another production restore.

Contain the source of damage

Ask the incident-response owner to confirm that affected devices and account access have been addressed. Keep unreviewed devices isolated under the organization’s response procedure. Microsoft’s recovery guidance puts cleaning devices before restoring files.

A copy captured after detection is evidence of the current state, not automatically a clean baseline. Do not label it safe merely because it was saved manually. Avoid opening suspicious files or enabling active content on an ordinary work device to test them.

Find the earliest relevant harmful activity

Compare the alert time with observed file changes and the response team’s findings. A large activity spike is a clue, not proof of the attack’s exact start. Ordinary bulk work can also create spikes, and some damage may precede the obvious burst.

Choose representative critical files from affected locations and inspect candidate versions in the approved environment. One clean-looking document does not certify an entire drive. Record the security assessment and the business owner’s content checks separately.

Select a recovery method with a defined outcome

For a limited set of damaged files, assess individual candidates. For widespread damage, follow the OneDrive activity-based restore procedure with IT. Review the first activity to undo and subsequent affected work before confirmation.

Do not use a fixed one-hour or two-hour offset as a guarantee. A suitable point must precede the relevant harmful activity and have usable recovery content. If valuable legitimate edits came later, preserve or recover them separately after validation.

Protect unaffected work outside the scope

Preserve verified useful files in an approved independent location. Moving them into another folder inside the same OneDrive does not exclude them from a whole-drive rollback. Desktop or Documents folders synchronized to that drive are not independent backups merely because they have familiar Windows names.

Do not run a trial restore in a production drive containing other people’s work to test a supposed folder-only recovery. Use a separately controlled test environment for future recovery exercises.

Verify security and business recovery

Have IT approve the recovery environment and restored content, then have document owners check the required revisions and dependencies. If damaged content reappears, stop and escalate instead of repeating an earlier restore. Keep an exception list for missing or reconstructed material. Reconnection and normal editing should follow the response plan, not simply the completion message from the restore tool.
