How to Use Instagram Close Friends List for Threads Audience

Threads lets you restrict who can reply to your posts, but it also offers a way to limit your audience to a smaller group. The Instagram Close Friends list you already maintain on Instagram can serve as a private audience on Threads. This feature is useful when you want to share personal updates, opinions, or experiments without broadcasting to all your followers. This article explains how to link your Instagram Close Friends list to Threads and control who sees your posts.

How the Close Friends Audience Works on Threads

Threads does not have its own private audience list. Instead, it borrows the Close Friends list from your linked Instagram account. When you set your Threads audience to Close Friends, only the people you have added to your Instagram Close Friends list can see your posts. This setting applies to all new posts you create after changing the audience, not to existing posts.

To use this feature, your Threads account must be linked to an Instagram account. You cannot use Close Friends on Threads if you signed up with a phone number or email address alone. The Close Friends list is managed entirely in the Instagram app, so any changes you make there reflect immediately on Threads.

The audience setting is independent for each post. You can change it before publishing a post by tapping the audience icon next to the post button. The default audience for your account is set in the Privacy section of Threads settings.

Method 1: Change the Default Audience for All Posts

1. Open Threads and go to your profile
   Tap the profile icon at the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Close Friends Posts Are Still Visible to Others

If someone who is not on your Close Friends list can see your post, check that you changed the audience setting before posting. Changing the default audience after posting does not affect already published posts. Also, Close Friends posts can be reshared by anyone who can see them. The reshare will be visible to their followers, not just your Close Friends.

Close Friends List Does Not Update Immediately

Changes made in Instagram usually sync within a few minutes. If you added someone to Close Friends and they still cannot see your Threads post, ask them to refresh the app or wait a few minutes. You can force a refresh by closing and reopening Threads.
