How to Test Fediverse Sharing With a Personal Mastodon Account

Threads allows you to share your public posts with other platforms that use the ActivityPub protocol, such as Mastodon. This feature is called Fediverse sharing. When enabled, your public Threads posts appear on Mastodon servers, and your profile becomes visible to Mastodon users. This article explains how to set up Fediverse sharing in Threads and test it using your personal Mastodon account.

Fediverse sharing is not automatic. You must enable it in your Threads settings and link your account to a Mastodon server. After setup, only public Threads posts are shared. Private posts and replies to private accounts are not sent to the Fediverse.

What Is Fediverse Sharing in Threads

The feature works only one direction from Threads to the Fediverse at launch. You cannot follow Mastodon accounts from Threads. You can only share your own public content outward. Replies from Mastodon users appear as replies on your Threads posts, but you must approve them before they are visible to others.

To use Fediverse sharing, you need a Threads account that is set to public. Your Instagram account linked to Threads must also be public. If your Instagram account is private, Fediverse sharing is not available. Additionally, you must have a Mastodon account on any server to test whether your posts are being shared correctly.

Steps to Enable Fediverse Sharing in Threads

1. Open Threads and go to your profile
   Tap the profile icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen. This takes you to your Threads profile page.

After enabling Fediverse sharing, your Threads profile becomes discoverable on ActivityPub servers. Your existing public posts are not retroactively shared. Only new public posts created after enabling the feature are sent to the Fediverse.

How to Test Fediverse Sharing With Your Mastodon Account

1. Create a public post in Threads
   Compose a new post and set its audience to Public. You can check the audience setting by tapping the globe icon before posting. After posting, wait a few minutes for the post to propagate to ActivityPub servers.
2. Open your Mastodon account
   Log in to your Mastodon account on the web or in a Mastodon app. Use the same Mastodon server where you have an account.
3. Search for your Threads profile on Mastodon
   In the Mastodon search bar, type your Threads profile URL. The URL format is https://www.threads.net/@yourusername. Replace yourusername with your actual Threads handle. Mastodon should display your Threads profile as a search result.
4. Open your Threads profile in Mastodon
   Tap the search result that shows your Threads profile. You will see your Threads bio and a list of public posts that have been shared to the Fediverse. The most recent public post you created should appear at the top.
5. Verify the post content
   Tap on the post to open it. Compare the text, images, and links with the original post in Threads. They should match exactly. If the post contains images, they should appear in the Mastodon view.

If your Threads profile does not appear in Mastodon search results, wait up to 30 minutes and try again. Fediverse sharing can take time to propagate across servers. If it still does not appear, confirm that Fediverse sharing is enabled and that your Instagram account is public.

Common Issues When Testing Fediverse Sharing

Threads posts are not showing up on Mastodon

The most common cause is that the post was not set to Public. Check the audience selector in Threads before posting. Only posts with the globe icon are shared. Also verify that Fediverse sharing is still toggled on in Settings > Account > Fediverse sharing. If you recently changed your Instagram account from public to private, Fediverse sharing is automatically disabled.

Mastodon search returns no results for my Threads handle

Mastodon search relies on the server having received the ActivityPub data. Some Mastodon servers take longer to index new profiles. Try searching from a different Mastodon server or using a Mastodon app that supports full-text search. Alternatively, ask a friend on another Mastodon server to search for your Threads handle. If they can see it, the issue is with your server’s indexing.

Replies from Mastodon users are not appearing in Threads

Threads requires you to approve replies from Mastodon users before they are visible. Open the post in Threads and look for a pending replies section. Tap the approval button to allow the reply to appear. Until you approve it, only you can see the reply.
