Threads now supports a per-user mute for the Fediverse, giving you more control over which accounts from other servers appear in your timeline. When you mute a user from Mastodon, Pixelfed, or any ActivityPub platform, their posts stop showing up on Threads without blocking or reporting them. What the Per-User Fediverse Mute Does

The per-user Fediverse mute is a Threads-only control that hides all posts from a specific Fediverse account. This account could be on Mastodon, Pixelfed, Friendica, or any other server that supports the ActivityPub protocol. The mute applies to the user across all areas of Threads: the For You feed, the Following feed, searches, and notifications.

The mute is separate from the account-level Fediverse mute that blocks an entire server. The per-user mute targets one person. You can mute a user even if you have never interacted with them before. You can also mute someone who follows you or someone you follow.

The mute does not remove existing posts from your timeline. It only prevents new posts from that user from appearing after you apply the mute. If you unmute the user later, their future posts will reappear.

What the Mute Does Not Do

The mute has several important limits. It does not block the user. The muted account can still see your public Threads posts on their own server. The mute does not remove likes or replies you have already made. It does not prevent the user from mentioning you. It does not send any kind of notification to the muted account.

The mute is also one-directional. You control your own view. The muted user continues to see your public content as before.

Steps to Mute a Fediverse User on Threads

You can mute a Fediverse user from their profile page or from a post in your timeline. Both methods produce the same result.

Mute from a User Profile

1. Open the user profile
   Tap the avatar or name of the Fediverse user you want to mute. This takes you to their profile page on Threads.
2. Tap the three-dot menu
   On the profile page, tap the three-dot icon located in the top-right corner of the screen.
3. Select Mute
   From the menu that appears, tap the Mute option. A confirmation message appears briefly at the bottom of the screen. The user is now muted.

Mute from a Post in Your Feed

1. Find the post in your feed
   Scroll to a post from the Fediverse user you want to mute. The post shows the user name and a small Fediverse badge.
2. Tap the three-dot menu on the post
   Tap the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of the post card.
3. Tap Mute username
   From the pop-up menu, select Mute [username]. The post disappears from your feed immediately, and the user is added to your mute list.

View and Manage Your Muted Users

1. Go to your profile
   Tap your profile avatar in the bottom-right corner of the Threads app.
2. Open Settings
   Tap the two-line menu icon in the top-right corner, then tap Settings.
3. Navigate to Privacy
   In the Settings menu, tap Privacy. Then tap Muted accounts.
4. Review and unmute
   You see a list of all muted Fediverse users. Tap Unmute next to any user to restore their posts to your timeline.

On Your Side

After muting, the user posts no longer appear in your For You feed, Following feed, or search results. You will not receive notifications for replies or mentions from that user. The user still appears in your followers list if they follow you. You can still visit their profile manually to see their posts.

On the Muted User Side

The muted user receives no indication that you have muted them. They can still see your public Threads posts on their own server. They can still reply to your posts or mention you. You will not see those replies unless you visit their profile or unmute them. The muted user can still follow you if they are not already following you.

Common Issues and Edge Cases

Mute Does Not Seem to Work for Some Users

If you mute a Fediverse user but still see their posts, the mute may not have saved. Open the muted accounts list in Privacy settings to confirm the user appears there. If the user is not listed, repeat the mute steps. If the user is listed but posts still appear, the user may have multiple accounts. Check the username and server name in the profile to ensure you muted the correct account.

Mute Does Not Remove Old Posts

The mute only applies to new posts created after the mute was applied. Old posts from that user remain in your timeline. To remove old posts, you can block the user instead. Blocking removes all past and future posts. Note that blocking also prevents the user from seeing your content and sends a notification to the user on some servers.

Can a Muted User Still Interact With Your Posts?

Yes. A muted user can still reply to your public Threads posts, like them, or repost them. Those interactions will not appear in your notifications. They will still appear on the post itself if you view it from the post page. If you want to prevent all interaction, use the Block option instead of Mute.

Mute Does Not Sync Across Instagram

Threads mutes are separate from Instagram mutes. Muting a Fediverse user on Threads does not mute that user on Instagram even if they have an Instagram account. You must mute them separately on each platform.
