When you create a Threads account, you must choose between a private account and a public account. If you enable Fediverse sharing, your public posts are also sent to servers like Mastodon, where users on those servers can see and interact with them.

Private Account: Visibility and Reach

With a private account, only your approved followers can see your posts. Your profile shows a lock icon, and your posts are hidden from the For You feed of users who do not follow you. Your posts do not appear in search results. People who visit your profile see only your bio and follower count. They must send a follow request to view your posts. Private accounts cannot enable Fediverse sharing, so your posts never leave Threads. Replies from non-followers are blocked, and only your followers can reply to your posts.

Steps to Switch Between Private and Public Account

You can change your account type at any time from the Settings menu. Switching from public to private hides all your existing posts from non-followers. Switching from private to public makes all your posts visible to everyone immediately.

1. Open your Threads profile
