When your Google Meet edition and language choices support translated captions, you can read meeting speech in a selected destination language. Configure both sides of the translation and test a spoken sample. Enabling ordinary captions without choosing translation can leave you reading text in the original language instead.
Open translated captions on a computer
Join the meeting and use the bottom Captions and translation control to turn captions on. In the dropdown on the left, select Translated captions. Alternatively, open More options, choose Settings, then Captions, and enable the option to see captions as people speak. Under the language controls, choose translated captions.
Select the source and destination
Set Translate from to the spoken language and Translate to to the language you want to read. Inspect the resulting text while a participant speaks a short sentence. If the meeting changes languages, review the settings rather than assuming the previous source language remains appropriate. Google notes that when Speech Translation is active, captions adjust automatically to the meeting, so the controls may reflect that experience.
Check usefulness and feature availability
Translated captions require an eligible edition, and Google’s language guidance warns about gradual rollout and beta translation quality. If the required choice is absent, ask the administrator to check entitlement and availability. Do not repeatedly recreate the meeting to obtain a missing licensed feature. Confirm important decisions in clear written language, particularly when captions contain unfamiliar names or figures. Caption appearance can be adjusted separately for readability. If you need a recording with captions, discuss the separate recording and caption options with the authorized organizer; your personal translated-caption view alone does not establish that such a record is being saved.
