Two Sent-like folders in a Gmail mail client can represent separate local and server copies, duplicate save operations, or different views of the same message. Compare Gmail on the web before deleting anything. A folder name alone does not tell you which copy is authoritative.
Identify the two locations
- Check whether each folder is local to the device or belongs to the Gmail account.
- Compare the same sent example in Gmail on the web.
- Inspect individual messages, recipients, times, and attachments.
- Use original identifiers as supporting evidence if there are separate server messages.
A message appearing under Sent, All Mail, and a custom label is not necessarily three stored Gmail copies. A local Sent folder can also contain mail that was never synchronized to the server.
Review the client’s sent-copy setting
Google’s recommended IMAP client guidance says Gmail saves sent messages on the server when the client sends using SMTP. An additional client action saving another server copy can therefore create confusion.
Use the relevant client’s current Gmail-specific settings to review whether it saves an extra sent copy and where. Do not disable sent preservation globally for every account or assume another provider behaves identically.
Test before cleaning historical mail
Send one harmless new message after a justified setting adjustment. Check the client and web mailbox, including the full content and recipient, to confirm the intended record remains.
Preserve local-only Sent mail and any required archive before removing folders or re-adding the account. A client folder deletion can synchronize to the server, depending on its mapping.
Do not bulk-delete all messages in a second Sent-looking folder merely to reduce the sidebar. Some may contain unique history or different versions. If there are genuine extra server copies, isolate and review a bounded set after fixing the ongoing save behavior.
This problem concerns where outgoing copies are saved. It differs from an email being submitted twice or a single incoming message appearing under several labels, so keep those diagnoses separate.
