How to Sign a Lost or Sold Device Out of Your Google Account

2026年10月27日 by wisechecker

Sign a lost, sold, or borrowed device out of your Google Account from a device you still control. Review all its relevant sessions and any associated passkeys; a single browser logout may not cover every route back in.

End the Google sessions

  1. Open Google Account Security & sign-in.
  2. Under Your devices, select Manage all devices.
  3. Select the relevant device or session.
  4. Choose Sign out.
  5. Inspect other sessions with the same device name and sign out the relevant ones too.

Google warns that identical device names can represent one device or several. Read the details carefully so you remove the intended access while keeping your own verification route available.

Review passkeys associated with the device

Google’s passkey guide distinguishes passkeys you created from those automatically registered by Android. For a manually created passkey on a lost or shared device, inspect Passkeys and security keys and remove the appropriate entry.

For an automatically registered Android passkey, the guide directs you to sign out the device through Manage all devices. Follow the method-specific instructions instead of assuming that changing the password removes every passkey.

Understand the limits of remote logout

Signing out does not erase downloaded files, screenshots, or mail copied to another service. It does not replace the device’s lost-device controls, local screen lock, or the correct preparation for selling the device.

If the device was stolen, review recovery methods and change the password as Google’s lost-phone guidance recommends. Contact your organization’s administrator if work access or data was involved.

Check the resulting status

A signed-out entry can remain in the recent device list. Read its status rather than repeatedly trying to make the row vanish. Investigate a genuinely new active session you cannot explain.

For a sale, carry out the manufacturer’s supported account-removal and reset procedure before handing over the device whenever possible, after backing up necessary local data. Remote Google sign-out alone should not be described as a complete erasure or resale preparation.
