For Gmail synchronization problems on Android, first compare the same account with Gmail on the web. If new mail exists online, focus on the phone’s app, account synchronization, connection, and background restrictions. A missing notification is a separate symptom from missing mail inside the app.
Check Gmail’s account-level controls
- Open Gmail, confirm the account, and pull down to refresh.
- Open Menu, Settings, and the affected account.
- Check Sync Gmail in the relevant data-usage settings.
- Review the days of mail synchronized if older offline messages are missing.
A reduced offline history is not proof of lost server mail. Google’s sync guidance also notes that refresh can take time, especially after a device has been unused.
Inspect device and profile restrictions
Check Android’s account synchronization controls for that account, using the manufacturer’s current menu paths. Verify connectivity, available device storage, and Google Account capacity separately.
For a work-profile Gmail app, inspect whether the profile is paused and whether organizational policy restricts access. A briefcase-marked app is not necessarily the same environment as personal Gmail.
Review any data-saving or battery restrictions that specifically affect the app. Do not turn off all system protections or choose unrestricted background use for every app as a blanket remedy.
Preserve local work before deeper repair
Update Gmail through Google Play and restart the device where appropriate. Check Drafts and Outbox before removing an account or clearing app storage.
Google reserves clearing Gmail storage for cases where earlier steps fail and warns that it can erase drafts and settings. Do not treat that as an interchangeable synonym for a harmless refresh.
After a targeted correction, use one harmless new delivery and inspect both the web mailbox and app. If the provider account is not Google-hosted, compare that provider’s webmail and supported connection. Record the account type, device, app version, and exact error for support rather than repeatedly resetting an otherwise functioning mailbox.
