A different-looking Gmail inbox does not necessarily mean your mail or settings were lost. A changed inbox type, toolbar mode, collapsed navigation, or display preference can explain the difference. Identify the specific missing control instead of trying to restore an unspecified earlier version.
Describe the visible change precisely
- Confirm the Google account and whether you are using Gmail on the web or in a mobile app.
- Note whether the change affects tabs, message spacing, toolbar actions, the reading area, or the sidebar.
- Check the same view at your normal browser zoom and window width.
Take a screenshot with private message details hidden if you need support. A description such as missing Labels under More is more useful than saying that everything changed after an update.
Use the control for the affected feature
Open Quick settings for inbox type, density, theme, and reading-pane choices. Use the top-left Menu button if the navigation is collapsed. Check See all settings for controls not shown in the quick panel.
If toolbar buttons are missing, select a message and inspect More, including the simple or advanced toolbar choice where offered. For text labels instead of icons, review Button labels in General. If category tabs disappeared, confirm that Inbox type is Default.
Verify mail before changing more settings
Search for a known recent message and an older one. A change in row count can reflect conversation grouping or section layout rather than deletion. Check All Mail, Spam, and Trash only if the messages themselves cannot be located.
Feature rollouts and organizational policy can differ, so an old screenshot is not proof that your account should have every pictured option. Use Google’s current guidance for the relevant platform. Avoid outdated rollback packages, unsupported browser versions, and extensions promising to restore a previous Gmail interface. If an expected control remains unavailable, report the exact account type, platform, and missing option without exposing private mail or assuming a site-wide outage.
