Gmail’s appearance controls differ between a computer browser, Android, and iPhone or iPad. A dark theme chosen on the web is not the same setting as a phone’s system Dark Mode. Use the route for the device where you want the appearance to change.
Change the theme on the web
- Open Gmail on a computer and click Settings.
- In Quick settings, find Theme and choose View all.
- Select Dark, Default, or another available theme.
- Save the choice and inspect the inbox and an open message.
Some themes expose additional background, vignette, or blur controls; others do not. A missing adjustment can be a limitation of the selected theme rather than a malfunction. Personal-photo backgrounds are a separate web option involving Google Photos.
Choose the appropriate mobile setting
On supported Android devices, Google’s route is Gmail menu, Settings, General settings, then Theme. Choose Light, Dark, or System default. Google specifies Android 10 or later for this dark-theme feature.
For iPhone or iPad, Google’s current guidance uses the device’s Dark Mode setting, available with iOS 13 or later, and then Gmail follows the device appearance. This can affect other apps too. Do not promise a separate Gmail theme switch on every iOS version.
Check readability rather than only the background
Open a normal text message and an HTML newsletter after making the change. The inbox theme and the colors inside a received HTML message are related visual concerns but are not identical controls.
If text becomes hard to read in one message, compare light mode temporarily and ask the sender for an accessible alternative if necessary. Do not enable a browser extension that requests mailbox access just to recolor a message.
Appearance settings do not encrypt mail, change the sender’s original formatting, or reduce the amount of stored email. If your goal is larger text or better contrast, also consider the device’s supported accessibility controls, and test the result at your usual screen size.
