If Gmail on iPhone is not updating, check the Gmail app and the exact account first. Apple Mail can also display a Gmail address, but its fetch settings do not control Google’s Gmail app. Likewise, a missing notification is different from a message that has not reached the mailbox.
Compare the app with the correct mailbox
- Open Gmail, select the intended address, and pull down from the top of the Inbox to refresh.
- Check the same account in its provider’s webmail using a trusted browser. Keep an existing working session available during troubleshooting.
- Test the iPhone’s connection with a familiar website, then update Gmail and restart the device if necessary.
If the message is absent from webmail too, investigate delivery, filters, and account capacity before treating this as an iPhone-only sync issue. For a non-Google account inside Gmail, compare with that provider’s mailbox rather than an unrelated Gmail web account.
Review Gmail’s background and sync settings
Google’s iPhone guidance directs you to iOS Settings, General, Background App Refresh, then Gmail. Enable it if you want Gmail to download mail while you are not using the app and the option is available under your device’s policies.
In Gmail, the documented sync-window route is Menu, Settings, then under General, Data usage and Sync settings. Review the number of days being synchronized where offered. Older mail outside an offline window is not necessarily deleted from the server.
Verify delivery after the change
Send one harmless test from another account and compare webmail, the open Gmail Inbox, and background notification behavior separately. Background permission is not a guarantee of instantaneous delivery under every network or device condition.
Check Google Account storage if Gmail cannot send or receive anywhere. Preserve unsent drafts before considering account removal or reinstallation; these actions can affect local work and other Google-app sessions. If the issue persists, record the app version, account type, last successful refresh, and exact error for support.
