Changing your Google password causes many sessions to sign out, but Google’s guidance lists exceptions. If you are trying to remove unauthorized access, review the remaining connections rather than treating the password change as a universal disconnect button.
Know the documented exceptions
Google says changing or resetting the password signs you out everywhere except certain devices used to verify your identity, some devices with third-party apps granted account access, and helpful home devices granted access.
Therefore, an open session surviving the change does not automatically prove the new password failed to save. Conversely, one app requesting the new password does not prove every other connection was ended.
Review the device list
- Open Google Account Security & sign-in.
- Under Your devices, select Manage all devices.
- Inspect devices and individual sessions.
- Sign out sessions you no longer need or do not recognize.
A device can have multiple sessions created by different browsers, apps, or authentication events. Sign out all relevant sessions for a device you want removed. The list can retain a signed-out entry as recent history.
Review sign-in methods and app access separately
Check registered passkeys, security keys, recovery details, and linked apps. Do not assume the password-change confirmation also deleted an unauthorized passkey or removed every app relationship.
Google’s passkey guidance explains that a device with a passkey may allow account access even after an ordinary sign-out. Remove a passkey associated with an unsafe or lost device through the relevant account controls, following the distinction between manually created and automatically registered passkeys.
Check what logout cannot undo
Signing out does not retrieve files already downloaded, erase screenshots, retract delivered mail, or remove copies forwarded elsewhere. It also does not delete an unauthorized Gmail forwarding rule or delegate.
If the password change followed a compromise, inspect those settings as well. If it was routine maintenance, sign back into legitimate apps as needed and update the stored password securely. For a managed account, follow the administrator’s reset and session-revocation procedure, which can include separate sign-in-cookie controls.
