If Google rejects a replacement password, read the specific validation message before trying another variation. A password can be disallowed because it is weak, previously used, or contains unsupported formatting.
Check the published requirements
Google’s password guide permits combinations of letters, numbers, and symbols using standard ASCII characters. Accented characters are not supported. It also rejects particularly weak passwords, passwords previously used on the account, and passwords beginning or ending with a blank space.
Google recommends making passwords at least 12 characters long. That is strength guidance, not a reason to assume that every account’s exact validation message is the same. Managed organizations can impose their own requirements.
Avoid accidental input problems
- Check the selected account before changing anything.
- Inspect the new-password and confirmation fields for differences.
- Check the keyboard layout and capitalization.
- Look for an accidental leading or trailing space when pasting.
- If available, use the field’s reveal control only where others cannot see the screen.
Do not paste the password into a public text editor, support message, or third-party “password checker” to diagnose it. A validation problem does not require sharing the secret.
Choose a genuinely new secret
Use a long, unique password rather than appending a predictable number to an old one. Avoid names, birthdays, phone numbers, common phrases, and keyboard patterns. A trusted password manager can generate an appropriate replacement.
Do not reuse your Google password at another service. Email accounts often control password resets elsewhere, so reuse increases the consequences of a breach at an unrelated provider.
Separate rejection from authentication failure
If Google asks you to verify ownership before allowing a change, that is not a new-password formatting error. Complete the legitimate verification or recovery path instead of cycling through replacement passwords.
After Google confirms the change, update the saved credential and test an appropriate sign-in. Keep recovery methods available. If an organization-managed account continues rejecting a compliant password, provide its administrator with the error wording, never the password itself.
