How to Change Your Google Password While You Can Still Sign In

2026年10月27日 by wisechecker

If you can still access your Google Account, change its password from the account’s security settings. First confirm that you are editing the intended account and can complete any additional verification Google requires.

Prepare the change

Use a trusted device. If you suspect the current device has malware or an unknown browser extension intercepting credentials, investigate from a safer device before entering the replacement password.

Save unfinished work and keep a working recovery or backup method available. Do not sign out of your only functioning session before checking whether you can complete the change.

Change the password

  1. Open your Google Account directly.
  2. Select Security & sign-in.
  3. Under How you sign in to Google, open Password.
  4. Reauthenticate or complete the additional check if requested.
  5. Enter a new password and select Change Password.

Choose a unique password you have not previously used for this account. Google’s strength guidance recommends a long password and avoiding personal information, common patterns, and reuse across important services. A trusted password manager can help generate and store it.

If Google requests more verification

A password change is a sensitive action. Being signed in does not guarantee that Google will allow it without another check. Use an established verification method offered by the account; a newly added device or method may not yet be trusted.

Follow the specific restriction shown. Do not disable 2-Step Verification or repeatedly replace recovery details to try to force the password change.

Verify access afterward

Update the saved password in your password manager and sign back into apps that request the new credentials. Inspect account settings to confirm that the change succeeded; an old open session remaining available does not necessarily mean failure.

Google lists exceptions to the sign-outs caused by a password change. If the change was prompted by suspected compromise, review devices, recovery information, sign-in methods, and linked apps separately. If you cannot authenticate well enough to change the password, use the official recovery process rather than creating a new account.
