You can use multiple Google Accounts in one browser, or separate them into browser profiles. The right choice depends on whether you need quick switching or stronger separation of everyday browsing information.
Account switching: convenient inside one browser context
Google’s account menu lets you add another account and switch between signed-in identities. This works well when you frequently move between your own mailboxes and can reliably check the selected address.
The accounts do not become one mailbox or share ownership of their data. However, Google’s default-account behavior can affect which identity a service selects. Check the full address before composing messages, sharing documents, or approving a third-party login.
Chrome profiles: separate browsing information
Chrome profiles keep information such as bookmarks, history, passwords, and settings apart. On a computer, use Chrome’s profile menu and Add Chrome profile, then choose a clear name and visual theme.
A useful arrangement is one profile for personal activity and another for work, with only the relevant Google sessions added to each. Confirm the address inside Gmail after setup; the browser profile’s name is only a label.
Profiles are not a security lock
Google warns that somebody using the same computer can switch to another Chrome profile. Do not treat profiles as protection from an untrusted person with access to your unlocked device.
For a borrowed computer, use an appropriate guest or private session and close it when finished. For ongoing device sharing, follow the operating system’s separate-user and locking arrangements as appropriate. Never store account passwords in somebody else’s browser profile.
A practical check before sending
- Confirm the browser profile if you use separate profiles.
- Read the Google Account address inside Gmail.
- Check the From address in the message if multiple sending identities are configured.
- Verify recipients and attachments before sending.
Deleting a Chrome profile is not a normal way to switch accounts. Google says profile removal erases its local bookmarks, history, passwords, and settings from the computer. Keep the profiles you need and switch deliberately instead of rebuilding them whenever the wrong mailbox opens.
