In many browser situations, Google’s default account is the one you signed in to first. To change it, you may need to sign out of the browser’s Google sessions and sign back in in the desired order.
Prepare before signing out
Save unfinished work and confirm that you can sign back in to every account you need, including the relevant verification methods. Do not start this procedure while your only working access to an account is the current session.
This procedure concerns Google websites in the current browser context. It is not a universal default for mobile apps, operating-system accounts, or every browser profile on the computer.
Choose the sign-in order
- Open a Google service in the browser profile you intend to use.
- Select the Google profile menu.
- Choose Sign out or Sign out of all accounts, as offered.
- Sign in first with the account you want as the usual default.
- Add the other accounts afterward.
- Open the Google service you normally use and inspect which account it selects.
Google describes the first signed-in account as the default in many cases, rather than promising that every product always follows one fixed rule. Verify the actual behavior for the services you use.
Keep account selection explicit for sensitive work
Even with a preferred default, read the selected account before sending mail, sharing a file, or joining an organization service. A link or an already open tab can lead to a different identity than expected.
If your goal is only to read another mailbox once, switching accounts in Gmail is simpler than resetting the whole sign-in order. Do not sign out all accounts unnecessarily.
What this does not change
The order does not merge accounts, transfer subscriptions, change a Gmail sender address, or move files. It also does not change the identity configured in a separate Chrome profile or a phone’s Gmail app.
If the browser is managed by your employer and sign-in rules are enforced, follow the administrator’s instructions. Repeatedly clearing cookies to fight those rules can disrupt legitimate sessions without changing the policy.
