Separate Google Meet Recording Access from Meeting Attendance

Attending a Google Meet session and being able to open its recording are separate permissions. A meeting invitation, an attendee shortcut, and a forwarded recording link can each point toward a file without proving that a particular account may watch it.

Identify the original recording and owner

Google saves recordings in the organizer’s Drive under Google Meet, inside a meeting-specific subfolder. The organizer and person who started recording receive an email link. Attendees may receive shortcuts in Drive, but a shortcut does not transfer ownership. Start from the original file and confirm which session it represents before diagnosing another person’s access.

Check the documented automatic-access case

Google says that, when recording starts at the scheduled meeting time and links to the Calendar event, individual meeting participants in the organizer’s organization automatically get access. Groups do not automatically receive access under that rule. Do not extend it to every outside attendee, every group member, or everyone who received a forwarded link. An external guest who legitimately joined may still need the owner to share the recording explicitly.

Review permissions under the intended account

If a recipient receives an access request screen, compare their signed-in account with the email address granted access. Have an authorized owner or editor inspect Share, direct recipients, General access, and any inherited folder permissions. Organization policies can limit external sharing. Keep that permission problem separate from Still processing, which concerns playback readiness. After an approved correction, ask the recipient to reopen the same file and confirm playback. Do not broaden the recording to Anyone with the link just because one attendee cannot open it; grant the agreed audience access and verify that specific result.
