Restrict Google Meet Chat During a Moderated Session

Google Meet chat moderation can pause participant messaging while the host delivers instructions. It does not necessarily erase existing messages or remove the ability to read them. Current continuous meeting chat also has different history behavior from a chat available only during the call.

Use the host’s messaging control

Enable Host Management and join as the authorized host. On a computer, open Host controls at the bottom right and turn Let contributors send messages off. On a phone or tablet, the documented path is More controls, Settings, Host controls. Inspect the resulting setting and explain how participants should ask urgent questions while sending is restricted.

Distinguish sending from history access

Google says participants can still read messages when sending is turned off. Continuous meeting chat may also be accessible to internal invited guests before and after a supported meeting. External guests and people not on the invitation can have more limited access. Therefore, pausing messages is not a way to retract private material already sent. Keep sensitive information out of a conversation whose audience has not been checked.

Restore the right setting at the right time

Turn the same permission back on when discussion resumes and ask a participant to confirm the composer is available. If chat was disabled in the event’s call options before a meeting, Google’s current continuous-chat guidance says the host cannot change that setting until the meeting ends. Reused or recurring meeting settings can persist, while one-time, nicknamed, and instant meeting chat restrictions reset after the meeting. Check the actual configuration before the next session. A participant’s inability to send can also come from organizational Chat policy, so do not assume every disabled composer reflects your moderation switch.
