A Google Meet breakout invitation moves you from the main call into a smaller group created by the host. You do not need to create a new meeting or ask the other participants for a different link. Use the prompt provided inside the existing session.
Check that your connection is supported
Google supports breakout participation from a computer or an updated Meet or Gmail mobile app. Telephone connections and Meet hardware also have supported participation routes. Third-party video-conferencing devices and outdated mobile apps cannot participate. If the host expects you in a room but you never receive a usable invitation, report your device and joining method rather than repeatedly opening a second copy of the meeting.
Accept the host’s room invitation
When the breakout prompt appears, choose Join. Choosing Cancel keeps you in the main room. If the host later assigns you to another room, accept the new Join prompt to move. A telephone participant uses *2 to enter the assigned breakout room, move between rooms, or return to the main room. After joining, check that you can hear the intended group before starting the task.
Know how to return and preserve work
On a computer or mobile device, use Return to main call when you need to leave the breakout. When the host ends the session, use the return prompt or wait for the automatic move. The closing interval is brief, so finish the agreed output before it expires. Breakout chat messages are deleted after the room ends; do not treat that chat as a permanent record of your group’s decisions. If you need help during the activity, use Ask for help where supported, and keep the host informed if your connection prevents participation.
