How to Turn Off Gmail Smart Compose or Change Personalization

2026年11月4日 by wisechecker

Smart Compose predicts text while you write. Its writing-suggestions control is separate from whether an email is sent, and personalization is a separate choice again. Turning off completion suggestions does not require deleting drafts or signing out of the account.

Change the intended desktop setting

In Gmail, open Settings and See all settings. Under General, find Smart Compose and select Writing suggestions off if you no longer want suggested text while composing. Save the changes.

Review the account before applying the change. A preference in your personal Gmail account does not establish the preference for another signed-in work account. For a phone, use the platform-specific instructions on the linked help page rather than expecting the desktop settings layout.

Distinguish personalization from the feature itself

Smart Compose personalization can adapt suggestions to your writing style. Disabling personalization and disabling writing suggestions are different outcomes. Choose the control that matches your goal and inspect any organization-managed restrictions.

The broader smart-feature setting also affects experiences beyond Smart Compose. Read its scope before changing it simply to remove one typing aid. Do not assume that a Smart Compose preference changes conversation history or data settings in every other Google AI product.

Verify the result in a new draft

Open a harmless draft and type enough ordinary text to check the behavior. Suggested reply buttons, grammar suggestions, and Gemini’s Help me write interface are different features; one can remain visible after Smart Compose is off.

If text is inserted unexpectedly, inspect keyboard suggestions, browser extensions, and operating-system writing tools as separate sources. Avoid changing them all at once, since that makes the cause difficult to identify. Keep your existing draft intact and confirm exactly which tool is producing the suggestion before seeking support.
