Gmail Proofread provides advanced writing suggestions, but eligibility and language support differ from ordinary spell checking. Diagnose the missing feature without assuming that every underlined word or absent underline comes from the same tool.
Check the dedicated Proofread requirements
The current Proofread guide describes the web version of Gmail and eligible Google AI or Workspace plans, with certain tester access. It lists English, German, and Spanish for web proofreading, plus additional languages for Workspace Experiments or Gemini Beta.
A broader Gemini feature overview can lag behind a dedicated feature guide. Check the current Proofread page and the options offered to your account rather than treating a generic plan or language list as a guarantee. A phone app does not necessarily expose the same proofreading interface.
Inspect the draft and grammar preference
Use a short, non-sensitive draft in a supported language. Where Proofread is active, an underlined word or phrase can open a suggestion card. You can accept the change or ignore it. Google’s guide says an ignored suggestion does not reappear for the same phrase unless you change the text.
Review Settings, See all settings, General, and the Grammar preference. Turning grammar suggestions off also disables Proofread suggestions. Browser spelling tools can remain independent of that Gmail setting.
Evaluate a suggestion before accepting it
Check whether a proposed tone or style change preserves your meaning. A grammatical sentence can still contain an incorrect name, amount, or promise. Undo an unwanted edit and correct the important wording yourself.
If the feature remains missing, record the account type, web browser, language, and whether the control is managed by your organization. Do not change account region or purchase a plan solely on the assumption that a missing underline proves ineligibility. Confirm the applicable feature access first.
