You can keep Gmail notifications while reducing what people can read on your locked phone. Lock-screen preview controls affect notification presentation, not the privacy of messages after someone unlocks the device.
Choose an iPhone preview policy
In iPhone Settings, open Notifications and review Show Previews, either globally or for Gmail where the app-specific control is offered. Choose When Unlocked or Never according to how much you want visible.
Also review whether Gmail alerts appear on the Lock Screen at all. Test with the phone actually locked; looking at a phone that has already recognized your face can give a different result from what a bystander would see.
Use Android’s sensitive-content controls
In Android notification settings, look for lock-screen notifications and sensitive-content options. Depending on the device, you can hide sensitive content, suppress a particular app’s lock-screen notifications, or hide notifications there entirely.
A device-wide setting affects more than Gmail. Prefer an app-specific restriction when that meets your needs, and verify the wording on your phone. Manufacturers and work profiles can expose different choices.
Check every place that displays message content
Send a harmless test email and inspect the locked screen, expanded notification, and any paired watch or other notification display. A Gmail widget or another mail app may reveal information separately from Gmail’s own alert.
Hiding previews does not stop mail from arriving and does not remove it from notification history or the mailbox. It also does not make an unlocked phone safe to share. Keep a suitable device lock and review other exposed displays. If you still want an audible alert, leave the sound enabled while changing content visibility. Avoid disabling all notifications unless that is the intended outcome; you can often preserve a useful arrival signal without showing the subject or message text.
