Gmail notification sounds on Android can be set for an account and affected by Android’s notification categories. Change the relevant email sound rather than the phone’s ringtone or every Gmail-related alert.
Open the account’s notification sound settings
In Gmail, open Menu, Settings, and select the account. Under Notifications, choose Notification sounds. Google’s current instructions then use Notification sound and Sound under Email or Chat and spaces.
Choose the email category you actually want to change. Mail, Chat, and meeting notifications can have different controls. If you have several accounts, repeat only for the account whose tone should differ.
Check the Android category
If Gmail opens an Android settings screen, inspect the category or channel name before selecting a tone. Android lets some categories be Alerting or Silent. A silent category may show a notification without playing your chosen sound.
Manufacturer interfaces differ, so use your device’s labels rather than assuming every phone has an identical menu. Touching and holding a recent Gmail notification can help identify the category responsible for that particular alert.
Verify with one new email
Keep Gmail’s notification level enabled and arrange a new message that qualifies for it. Check notification volume, silent modes, and Do Not Disturb if the alert appears without sound. Notification cooldown on supported Android versions can also reduce repeated interruptions.
To silence the sound while keeping visual alerts, select None where offered rather than disabling synchronization. If you want to silence only one account, leave the other accounts’ email notifications intact. Do not grant a ringtone app access to Gmail or download unknown sound files to solve a tone-selection problem. If the chosen tone keeps reverting, record the account, channel, phone model, and whether a work profile or device policy manages the setting.
