How to Draft an Email in Google Docs and Open It in Gmail

2026年11月4日 by wisechecker

Google Docs can hold an email-draft building block so people can collaborate on wording before opening a compose window in Gmail. Sharing the document does not automatically send the message, and document collaborators are not automatically email recipients.

Create the email building block

On a computer, open the intended Google Doc. Choose Insert, Building blocks, then Email draft, or type @email and select the building block. Add the intended recipients, subject, and message text.

Review the document’s sharing before adding sensitive correspondence. Anyone allowed to read the document may see the draft’s content and addresses. Use placeholders if reviewers do not need a recipient’s private contact information.

Open the message in Gmail

Choose Preview in Gmail from the email draft. The current Google help page says the Google Account language must be English to preview the draft in Gmail. If the control is unavailable, check that requirement and the account rather than assuming the document has already become a sent email.

Gmail opens a pop-up compose window where you can make further changes. Check the signed-in account and the From identity. Google’s instructions say the email is sent from the account you are logged into; do not assume that owning the Doc determines the sender. Delegated-mailbox access has its own supported controls and limitations.

Review the final compose window before sending

Confirm To, Cc, Bcc, subject, links, formatting, and any required attachments in Gmail itself. An attachment discussed in the document is not necessarily attached to the email. Read the finished message rather than assuming every collaborator’s latest change was carried across.

Sending remains an explicit Gmail action. If you opened the draft in Gmail and then continued editing in Docs, compare the two versions before sending; do not presume continuous synchronization between an already opened compose window and the document. Keep one approved version and verify Sent only after you intentionally send it.
