If the Gmail app cannot add another provider’s account, check that provider’s supported authentication before changing Gmail settings. An incorrect password, unsupported sign-in method, certificate error, and organizational restriction are different problems.
Identify the provider and exact failure
- Confirm the full account address and provider.
- Try the provider’s official webmail to verify account access.
- Use its listed provider option in Gmail where available.
- Record the exact error without exposing passwords or verification codes.
Success in webmail establishes access to the account, but not necessarily permission for every external app. A managed service can require administrator approval or a particular client.
Check secure setup requirements
For manual setup, obtain current IMAP and SMTP settings from the provider. Check the complete username, server names, encrypted connection modes, and any provider-specific app authorization requirement.
Do not assume every service accepts the ordinary password in a manual dialog. Equally, do not generate a Google app password for a non-Google mailbox simply because the client is named Gmail.
Preserve security and local work
A certificate warning or Email security not guaranteed message needs investigation with the provider. Do not accept an unencrypted connection, remove 2-Step Verification, or install an unknown certificate merely to complete setup.
Update Gmail through the official store and check that the selected connection type is supported. Do not assume every POP or enterprise configuration is available through the same Personal IMAP path.
If an existing account must be removed before reconnecting, save local drafts and Outbox content first. Avoid repeated removal and addition without identifying the failure; that can disrupt access without repairing the provider’s authentication policy.
Ask provider or organizational support for the approved method using the client version, platform, error, and account type. After a legitimate correction, verify incoming mail, an outgoing test, and the reply address. Adding the account does not by itself import its history into your separate Gmail web mailbox.
