Gmail Sends Duplicate Notifications: Check Other Mail Apps and Devices

2026年10月29日 by wisechecker

Two alerts for the same email often come from two notification sources rather than duplicate delivery. Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook, a browser, and another device can each announce a mailbox they monitor.

Identify the app behind each alert

Expand the notifications and inspect the app icon, account address, and time. On Android, touching and holding an alert can reveal its notification settings. On iPhone, use the notification’s app identity and the app’s settings.

Compare the actual messages inside the mailbox. If there is only one message, start with notification sources. If there are two independently delivered messages, investigate those copies separately; muting alerts would only conceal the delivery issue.

Choose which app should announce the account

Review other mail apps configured with the same address. You can leave access in place while disabling that account’s alerts in the app you do not want to hear from. Prefer an account-specific choice over muting an entire app that also handles other important mailboxes.

Check desktop Gmail notifications too if the apparent duplicate is a sound from another nearby device. A phone and laptop both alerting is not necessarily a malfunction.

Test before removing accounts or devices

After changing one source, have a single new message arrive and identify the remaining alert. Verify that the selected primary app still announces the intended account. Keep a note of any label-specific or chat notifications that should remain enabled.

Do not remove a Google Account, delete app data, or change forwarding rules just to stop a second sound. If both alerts demonstrably come from the same Gmail app and account, record their wording and times, update the app, and compare its notification categories. Distinguish a summary followed by an individual alert from two separate message deliveries. Redact names and message previews before sharing screenshots with support.
