Google Workspace Routing Sends Mail to the Wrong Destination: Audit the Rule Scope

2026年10月29日 by wisechecker

If Workspace routing sends mail to an unexpected destination, audit the effective rule scope and message path before adding another compensating rule. Overlapping settings can make a quick fix create duplicate delivery, loops, or unintended disclosure.

Preserve the current configuration and evidence

Record the sender, envelope recipient, delivered destination, time, and Message-ID for a harmless example. Save the relevant rules, address lists, organizational-unit inheritance, and route definitions before editing.

Distinguish changing the envelope recipient from adding another recipient or changing a header. The visible To address does not always describe every delivery destination created by an administrator rule.

Review effective routing conditions

Google distinguishes Default routing from specialized Routing settings. Check inbound, outbound, internal inbound, and internal outbound message selections, account types, envelope filters, and address-list exceptions.

Inspect inherited and overlapping rules as well as the obvious local rule. Google’s guidance explains that settings can interact and that reject actions have special precedence. A rule for active Gmail users does not necessarily handle suspended, unrecognized, or archived addresses the way you expect.

Test the smallest correction

Use Email Log Search and recipient-side tests to verify which route actually applied. Narrow the affected user, address, message type, or destination only when the intended design is clear. Allow for documented propagation; Google notes changes can take up to 24 hours.

Do not delete every rule or enable catch-all delivery as a general repair. Test normal internal and external messages and any approved dual- or split-delivery path after the change. Confirm that no extra recipient receives confidential copies. Retain a rollback plan for the specific modified rule, and document what was observed rather than claiming the whole domain was audited from one successful test.
