A missing or restricted automatic-forwarding option in work Gmail can be an intentional organization policy. Check whether forwarding is disabled entirely or limited to internal destinations before troubleshooting the user’s confirmation email.
Establish the business need and destination
Identify which account would forward, which messages are needed, and the exact receiving address. Confirm whether the destination is an approved organizational mailbox or an external service.
Forwarding a complete mailbox can disclose confidential messages, attachments, and future correspondence. A vacation handover, team queue, or integration may have a safer supported solution such as delegation or an administrator-managed route.
Ask the administrator to inspect the effective policy
Google’s current controls are under Apps, Google Workspace, Gmail, End User Access, Automatic forwarding. Administrators can allow forwarding to any address, limit it to internal addresses, or disable user-controlled automatic forwarding.
Review the user’s organizational unit and inherited setting. If forwarding is off, the option is unavailable in Gmail. A confirmation link cannot override that administrator policy, and user-controlled forwarding is separate from other routing or address-map settings.
Apply and verify a narrow approved solution
If forwarding is justified, document the destination, scope, owner, and review date. Preserve the Gmail copy according to the organization’s rules and test a harmless message. Where only certain messages are required, consider an approved filter rather than all incoming mail.
Do not turn forwarding on for everyone to solve one request, or send work mail to a personal inbox while waiting. Keep a record of the effective setting and any administrator-managed route so future staff can explain where copies go. Verify that disabling a user’s forwarding setting actually addresses the relevant route; another routing mechanism may continue independently. Remove the temporary arrangement when the business need ends.
