A Google passkey sign-in can ask you to unlock your device with its PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition instead of entering the Google password. The device unlock and the Google password are different credentials.
Recognize the intended sequence
Start from Google’s legitimate sign-in page for your account. If a passkey is available, the browser and operating system may ask you to confirm using the device’s normal credential interface.
For example, a computer can ask for its local device unlock while using a passkey. That does not mean your Google password has been replaced with the same PIN at every website.
Keep the unlock secret local to the proper flow
Follow only an operating-system or credential-manager prompt that you understand and initiated. An ordinary web form asking you to type a device PIN, or a caller asking you to read it out, should not be treated as the same thing.
Google says biometric information used for device fingerprint or face unlock stays on the device and is not shared with Google. This is distinct from separately enrolling a recovery selfie video, which is another account feature with its own data handling.
If the device PIN is not accepted
Check that you are using the unlock method for the device or credential manager named in the prompt. A Google password will not necessarily satisfy a local device-unlock request.
Do not reset the device, remove its lock, or erase a credential store just to test the prompt. Those actions can affect more than this Google sign-in. Use the manufacturer’s supported unlock-help process or another existing Google sign-in method.
If you want a password-based sign-in
Choose Try another way when Google offers it. To change the usual preference after signing in, review Skip password when possible in Google Account security settings.
Changing that preference does not require deleting the passkey, and a work or school policy can affect the available flow. Before creating a passkey on any device, remember that access to its unlock method can become access to your Google Account. Use a personal, protected device.
