Google Passkey Is Not Available: Check Device, Browser, and Account Requirements

2026年10月29日 by wisechecker

If Google does not offer a passkey, check the device, browser, screen lock, account policy, and enrollment status. A missing option does not have one universal cause.

Check the supported environment

Google’s current guide lists supported systems including Windows 10 or later, macOS Ventura or later, ChromeOS 109 or later, Android 9 or later, and iOS 16 or later. Compatible hardware keys need FIDO2 support to hold a passkey.

Browsers also have minimum versions. Keep the browser current and consult Google’s live requirements instead of assuming that any browser on a supported computer will work. Some environments restrict passkeys in private browsing.

Check the device’s credential settings

  • Enable the device’s screen lock.
  • Check which credential manager holds the passkey.
  • For the Apple setup described by Google, check iCloud Keychain.
  • For a phone-to-computer sign-in, check the required Bluetooth availability.

Do not remove the screen lock to make sign-in easier. Google says disabling it can make a passkey unavailable until the lock is enabled again.

Check the account and preference

Open the passkey list for the intended Google Account. A passkey created for another identity cannot authenticate this one.

Review Skip password when possible. Google also says repeatedly choosing another sign-in method can make passkey challenges appear less often. That is different from the passkey being deleted.

Consider a new or restricted method

A newly created passkey may take up to seven days to become available. An at-risk method can also be restricted for security. Use the account’s status and instructions; do not try to bypass the restriction with repeated enrollment.

For a managed account, an administrator may permit passkeys for a second step or sensitive actions without permitting a passwordless sign-in. Ask about that distinction.

Keep a working alternative

Select Try another way when offered and use an existing trusted method. Avoid deleting all passkeys or resetting a security key as a generic test. Once access works, investigate the particular device or policy problem while preserving your remaining recovery routes.
