Gmail’s smart-feature settings and Gemini’s individual tools overlap, but they are not the same switch. Review the experience you want to control and the scope of the setting before assuming that disabling one option disables every use of Google AI.
Distinguish the three smart-feature scopes
The control for smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet governs experiences within those products, including email categorization, Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and summary cards. The separate Workspace smart-feature control covers experiences across Workspace, including Gemini features and events derived from Gmail.
A third control covers smart features in other Google products. Its examples and applicable account conditions differ again. The settings operate independently; enabling one is not the same as enabling all three.
Check a feature’s additional controls
Some tools have their own settings as well. Smart Compose can have a writing-suggestions control and personalization choice. A missing Gemini tool can also depend on plan, language, country, rollout, and platform, even when its required smart settings are on.
Conversely, turning off a broad smart-feature setting can remove more than the single AI experience you wanted to hide. Read the affected-feature explanation before changing it. Check the account shown in Gmail, especially when a personal mailbox and a managed mailbox are open together.
Keep data-use claims tied to the actual product
Google’s Workspace privacy commitments distinguish Workspace features from data you deliberately share with Gemini Apps, Search, or another service. Do not treat an in-Gmail preference as a complete account-wide statement about every Google product’s activity settings.
After changing a setting, verify the intended behavior on the devices you use. Record which control changed and which features were affected. If your organization manages the setting, consult its administrator. There is no need to delete mail, cancel an account, or disable security protections merely to understand the difference between these controls.
