Gmail on Android Says Waiting for Sync: Check Storage and the Account

2026年10月29日 by wisechecker

Waiting for sync in Gmail on Android can occur during initial setup, after a long period offline, or when a device or account condition prevents synchronization. Check whether progress is occurring before removing the account and restarting the process.

Compare server access and local progress

Open the account’s webmail to confirm that it is accessible and contains the expected mail. In the app, verify the account and note the exact status message. Check whether some messages are arriving or the state is completely unchanged.

A large history can take time to synchronize. Google’s guidance says a refresh can take up to 15 minutes and longer after a device has been unused; that is not a universal completion deadline for every initial mailbox download.

Check the conditions that can stop progress

  1. Verify a stable connection and any legitimate network sign-in requirement.
  2. Check available device storage separately from Google Account storage.
  3. Inspect Sync Gmail and device account synchronization.
  4. Review a paused work profile or relevant background restrictions.

If the account needs authorization, complete its genuine provider sign-in flow. Do not keep submitting an old password to a client that requires a different supported method.

Use a smaller, preserved test scope

Review the configured days of mail to sync and offline attachment needs. A smaller appropriate local history can reduce download work, but it should not delete required server mail. Confirm the actual setting and expected effect.

Update Gmail through its official store and restart the device if appropriate. Preserve local Drafts and Outbox content before account removal or storage clearing.

Do not reset repeatedly at a fixed timer or disable verification to force synchronization. If the status remains stuck without progress, provide support with the device, app version, account type, available storage, connection, and elapsed time. A reproducible account-specific error is more useful than a generic claim that every Waiting for sync message has the same cause.
