Gmail Message Text Is Garbled: Check the Original Encoding and Sender

2026年10月30日 by wisechecker

Garbled characters in a Gmail message can indicate incorrectly declared text encoding or damaged content from the sender. This differs from an unfamiliar language: translation cannot reliably repair text that was decoded incorrectly. Determine whether the problem affects one message or Gmail’s interface generally.

Compare the same message safely

  1. Open the affected message in Gmail on a computer and compare it with a second current client you already trust.
  2. Check whether only the body is garbled or whether the subject and other messages are affected too.
  3. Ask the known sender whether their Sent copy has the same characters, using a separate established channel if the email is unexpected.

If one specific message is damaged everywhere, changing your keyboard language or Gmail display language is unlikely to reconstruct its original wording. If only one browser is affected, compare a clean browser profile without adding new extensions.

Use the original as diagnostic evidence

In the message’s More menu, choose Show original. A mail administrator can inspect MIME fields such as Content-Type, charset, and Content-Transfer-Encoding. The MIME standard distinguishes the character set from the transfer encoding; changing one arbitrarily can make the evidence harder to interpret.

The raw source can legitimately contain encoded text. Its appearance alone does not prove corruption. Keep the original unchanged and share it only through an approved private support channel, because it can contain the entire message and private routing details.

Ask for a corrected copy

For a sender-side problem, request a new plain-text message or a correctly encoded export from the sender’s normal application. Have them verify names, dates, and amounts before resending. Do not guess the intended characters in a payment instruction or other consequential statement.

Use Gmail’s Translate message only when the original text is readable but in another language. Avoid unknown encoding-repair extensions and public conversion sites for private mail. No general Gmail setting can restore characters that were already replaced or lost before the message reached your account.
