Gmail Live has separate availability, microphone, and playback requirements. If its button is absent, investigate eligibility. If a session opens but cannot hear you, investigate microphone access and mute state. Turning up the speaker does not grant microphone permission.
Check the supported account and device
Google’s dedicated Gmail Live guide describes an English-language beta in the Gmail app on Android phones and iPhones. It specifically excludes Android tablets at present. Eligible personal plans or Workspace Experiments can provide access; managed accounts also depend on the relevant Workspace plan and administrator-controlled Gemini Beta access.
Feature overviews and individual beta guides can change at different times. Confirm the dedicated guide and what your account offers rather than assuming every Gemini-enabled account has voice access on every device.
Separate input from output problems
When first starting Live, review the terms and grant the Gmail app microphone access if you choose to use the feature. If you denied that permission earlier, use the device’s app-permission settings. Do not grant microphone access to unrelated websites as a workaround.
Inside a session, Mute turns off your microphone while leaving the conversation active. Unmute it to resume speaking. If you cannot hear the answer, check the device’s output volume and audio route. A disconnected network is another issue: restore connectivity and use the offered retry control.
Verify the answer and end the session deliberately
Use a harmless question for testing and avoid speaking confidential information where other people can hear. Check cited emails for dates, amounts, and instructions before relying on an answer. Opening a cited email ends the current Live session, according to Google’s guide.
Use End when finished; merely muting is different. Live transcripts can appear in Gemini in Workspace conversation history, which has its own review and deletion controls. If the feature remains unavailable, report the account type, phone platform, and exact error without exposing message contents or recorded private speech.
