If a Gmail filter misses new messages, test its conditions against a specific missed example before changing the action. A rule can be enabled and still correctly skip a message whose sender, subject, recipient, or attachment status differs from your assumption.
Reproduce the saved search
- Open Settings, See all settings, then Filters and blocked addresses.
- Find the rule and inspect its exact criteria.
- Run those criteria as a Gmail search.
- Compare the missed message with a known matching example.
Use the actual sender address rather than the display name. If a service changes its notification address or subject wording, a narrow rule based on the old value may no longer match. Check the individual reply rather than only the conversation’s overall title.
Reduce conditions to locate the mismatch
Remove one condition at a time in a temporary search. A phrase, date restriction, negative term, or attachment requirement can exclude otherwise similar mail. Do not broaden the live filter until you understand which condition was responsible.
For alias or delivery-address rules, compare the visible To field with delivery headers through Show original. A mailing list or forwarding route may not place your address in the field you chose.
Verify the action on genuinely new mail
Once the query matches the right examples, review the filter’s action and save the correction. Use a harmless newly delivered message to test it. An old message appearing in search does not prove that the incoming rule already acted on it.
Google states that replies must meet the conditions themselves. A new reply without the original keyword or attachment can remain unfiltered even in the same conversation.
If the action involves forwarding, check the verified destination and relevant organization policy separately; do not send private test content to an unapproved address. For troubleshooting, prefer a label-only test and keep mail visible. Avoid repeatedly adding overlapping rules, because that makes it harder to determine which condition and action are actually controlling the result.
