Gmail for a supervised child account is not always identical to an adult’s Gmail. However, the differences depend on the child’s age and how supervision was established. A restriction described for a newly created young-child account should not be applied to every supervised teenager or previously existing account.
Identify which restrictions apply
Google’s child-Gmail guide lists differences for children below the applicable age, including automatic forwarding, offline Gmail, and mailbox delegation. It also says those listed restrictions do not apply when the child is above the applicable age or supervision was added to a previously existing Google Account.
Check that distinction before searching for a missing switch. Do not change the child’s birthday to reveal an unavailable feature. Account and age eligibility are different from a browser display problem.
Understand mail delivery and privacy differences
For the young-child accounts covered by the guide, Gmail does not serve ads, and messages identified as spam are not delivered to either the child’s inbox or spam folder. If an expected message is missing, check the sender and account rather than assuming an empty spam folder proves the message was never sent.
The guide recommends adding an expected sender to the child’s contacts when delivery is a problem. That is not a reason to trust every message from that address or to disable other protections. A parent should still help the child recognize suspicious links and requests for private information.
Check the actual surface being used
Gmail can include Chat, and Google’s guide warns that blocking the standalone Chat app does not necessarily block Chat inside Gmail. Review the relevant service controls rather than assuming an app block covers every way to access a feature.
Similarly, signing in through a normal browser does not give that device all the supervision available on a supported Android device or Chromebook. Distinguish an account setting from a device restriction.
Use the right help for a missing feature
Confirm the age category, whether the account was created as supervised or supervised later, and whether the identity is personal or school-managed. Then consult the feature’s current guide. Avoid installing a forwarding or mailbox-access app as a shortcut around a child-account restriction.
