If a child cannot sign in to Gmail, identify the account and device before resetting anything. The problem can involve a parent-permission prompt, an account without a functional Gmail address, a managed school identity, or a genuine password issue.
Confirm the account has Gmail
Check the full account identifier with the parent. Some supported young-child Pixel Tablet accounts can exist without a Gmail address and password. They need Google’s supported upgrade process before Gmail can be used; treating an autogenerated identifier as an email address will not fix sign-in.
A school account may use a different sign-in route or have Gmail controlled by the school. Family Link does not give the parent administrative control over a Google Workspace for Education account. Ask the school administrator about an unavailable school service.
Complete the permitted sign-in route
For browser access, open Google’s legitimate sign-in page or Gmail, enter the child’s account details, and follow the parent-permission request if it appears. The parent may need to verify with their own Google Account. Do not ask the child to disable supervision or use an adult’s credentials instead.
Family Link’s Controls for signing in setting can affect access on unsupervised devices and browsers. Read that setting deliberately rather than changing it just to dismiss a prompt. Most device-level Family Link controls do not apply to ordinary browser sign-in on an unsupervised device.
Match the error to the next action
- Password rejected: Use the eligible Family Link password-reset route or the account’s official recovery process.
- Parent approval needed: Complete the displayed approval with the authorized parent.
- Service unavailable: Read the age and account-type restriction for that service.
- Android setup issue: Follow the supervised-device instructions for that device and account.
Do not factory-reset a working device or delete the child’s account as a general sign-in test. Save any important local information before an official setup procedure changes accounts on a device. Keep the error text private and specific so the parent or administrator can distinguish access policy from a broken connection.
