Gmail desktop alerts depend on Gmail’s own notification choice, the browser’s site permission, and the computer’s notification settings. Check those layers separately before treating a missing popup as missing email.
Choose which messages Gmail should announce
Open Gmail in a supported desktop browser and sign in. In Settings, See all settings, find Desktop notifications. Choose new-mail alerts, important-mail alerts, or off, then save changes.
Google says that with inbox categories enabled, new-mail notifications cover messages in Primary. Important-mail notifications use Gmail’s importance classification. A message arriving in another category may therefore be delivered normally without generating the alert you expected.
Check site permission and system delivery
Review the notification permission for the genuine Gmail site in the browser. If it is blocked, allow it only if you want Gmail alerts. Then check that the operating system permits notifications from that browser and that a focus or do-not-disturb mode is not suppressing them.
Google’s desktop instructions describe notifications after you sign in and open Gmail in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. Keep Gmail open for a meaningful test rather than expecting every closed-browser configuration to behave identically.
Test one new message
Arrange for a new, ordinary message to arrive and compare its appearance in Gmail with the system notification area. A past message, a read conversation, or a message filtered out of the selected notification scope is not an equivalent test.
If banners appear without sound, inspect Gmail’s notification-sound selection and the computer’s audio settings separately. If the browser permission is managed, ask your administrator rather than resetting the browser. Record the account, chosen notification level, category, browser, and whether the system notification history contains the alert. That separates Gmail filtering from a popup hidden by the operating system.
