Missing Gmail notifications on Android can come from account settings, label sync, or Android’s app notification controls. A delivered message and a displayed alert are separate events.
Confirm delivery and the account’s alert level
Open the intended account in Gmail and refresh the inbox. If the new message is missing there and in web Gmail, investigate delivery first. If it is present, open Gmail Settings, choose the account, and review Email notifications.
Check every affected account separately. High priority only intentionally excludes many messages. Google’s current guide says high-priority notification settings override other notification settings for particular labels.
Review label sync and Android permissions
For a specific label, open the account’s Manage labels settings. Select the label and inspect Sync messages and its notification options. Google requires label synchronization to be enabled before notifications can be enabled for that label.
Then use Gmail’s Manage notifications link or Android Settings to inspect Gmail’s app notifications and relevant notification categories or channels. A channel can be silent or disabled even when Gmail’s overall app switch is on. Names and controls vary by phone manufacturer and Android version.
Test sync and suppression separately
Confirm Sync Gmail is enabled for the account. If messages arrive only after opening the app, check sync and the device’s background restrictions using the manufacturer’s guidance. Do not disable battery or security protections for the whole device.
Test one new message while noting whether it appears in the inbox, notification shade, and lock screen. Android do-not-disturb, silent channels, or notification cooldown can affect presentation without blocking mail delivery. Keep a record of the account, label, alert level, and channel before changing them. Avoid clearing Gmail’s app storage as a first step, especially while drafts or queued messages may exist locally.
