Distinguish a Google Meet Viewer from a Contributor

A Google Meet participant displaying View only has a different role from a full contributor. Google’s current help also calls this a moderated contributor role. It can suit a large session where most attendees observe while selected people speak and present.

Recognize the restricted role

Google’s moderated-role guidance says viewers can observe, raise their hand, use reactions, and take part in activities such as questions and polls. They cannot share microphone audio, camera video, or their screen. A disabled microphone in this role is therefore not necessarily a faulty device. Check the View only label beside the meeting name before troubleshooting hardware permissions.

Request a contributor handoff

When an attendee needs to speak, they can raise their hand. An authorized host or co-host on the web can open People, select the participant, and choose Make a contributor. Google also supports changing the role while using picture-in-picture on a computer. Confirm that the selected attendee now has the needed controls before starting their contribution, and return their role when appropriate for the format.

Check edition and chat differences

Preset viewer roles require a supported Workspace edition. Do not assume every meeting offers them or that being a contributor makes someone a co-host. Chat deserves a separate check: the moderated-role page lists chat as unavailable, while Google’s newer continuous-meeting-chat guidance says viewers can send messages when that experience is enabled. Read the actual meeting’s chat controls and organizational policy rather than promising universal viewer chat behavior. Likewise, a role change does not automatically unlock files linked in the meeting. The successful outcome is the intended contribution ability in this session, with hosting and artifact permissions still handled separately.
