Choose Google Meet Access Settings Before Sharing the Meeting Link

A Google Meet link can be forwarded beyond its intended audience. Review meeting access before distributing it, especially for interviews or confidential discussions. The access type determines who enters automatically; it is separate from whether participants may chat, present, or turn on their microphones.

Compare the available access types

In the meeting’s Host controls, find Meeting access. Open allows anyone with the link to enter without knocking. Trusted allows people in the host’s organization and external guests invited through Google Calendar to enter without knocking. Restricted allows invited guests, including people invited by a host from inside the meeting, while others ordinarily need to knock. Restricted is unavailable to consumer accounts.

Decide whether uninvited people may ask

For supported Trusted or Restricted configurations, review the option allowing people with the link to ask to join. Turning that option off disables knocking for the meeting and automatically declines people outside the permitted group. An external guest using a different Google Account from the invited address can therefore be affected. Check the guest’s intended identity before sending final joining instructions.

Save and verify the intended policy

Save changes in the event’s video call options, or close the in-meeting controls after making the change there. Review the displayed access type again. Recurring meetings retain access settings, so a previous public session deserves particular attention before a private one. Tell the responsible moderator whether legitimate uninvited guests are expected and who can approve them. Organization policies may impose additional restrictions that a host cannot override. Share the final link only through the agreed channel, and treat successful delivery of an invitation as different from verified admission eligibility.
