Turn Google Meet Noise Cancellation On or Off for the Current Task

Google Meet noise cancellation can reduce non-speech sounds such as typing, doors, construction noise, and room echo. It can also remove sounds that a lesson or demonstration needs. Choose the setting for the current activity rather than assuming that stronger filtering always produces the right result.

Find the audio setting

Before joining on a computer, open the meeting’s pre-join screen, choose More options, Settings, and Audio. During a meeting, use More options and the same Audio settings. Turn Noise cancellation on or off if the feature is available for your account and meeting. Close settings and check that the intended microphone remains selected.

Match filtering to the material

For an ordinary spoken discussion, enable cancellation when unwanted non-speech noise competes with voices. For a music example or another sound-based demonstration, turn it off and ask a listener whether the intended sound remains audible. Google recommends turning it off for people using an electrolarynx. The feature does not cancel other people’s voices or television dialogue, and it does not affect audio captured through screen sharing.

Confirm the result with a listener

Compare a short example with the setting on and off, keeping the same microphone position and speaking level. Where shown, the ring around the voice indicator reports how much noise is being canceled. Treat that display as feedback about processing, not proof of clear sound for every listener. If you cannot find the option, check eligibility instead of changing unrelated browser permissions. Some Google Workspace with Gemini users see Studio sound in place of noise cancellation. Restore the appropriate setting when the meeting changes from a demonstration back to conversation.
